The hourly-to-salary formula
Converting an hourly wage to an annual salary uses one simple formula: annual salary = hourly wage × hours per week × weeks per year. For a full-time schedule of 40 hours across 52 weeks, that is your hourly rate × 2,080. A $25 hourly wage becomes $52,000 per year, $30 becomes $62,400, and $50 becomes $104,000.
If you work part-time or take unpaid weeks off, reduce the hours-per-week or weeks-per-year figures accordingly. Someone earning $30 per hour but working only 30 hours a week for 48 weeks earns $30 × 30 × 48 = $43,200, not $62,400 — so the schedule matters as much as the rate.

All figures are pre-tax. Standard full-time is 40 hours per week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year. Currency is display-only; no exchange rate conversion is applied. Empty or negative entries are treated as 0.
Using it to set freelance rates
Freelancers and contractors should not simply match a salaried hourly rate, because they pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare, buy their own health insurance, fund their own retirement, and have unpaid time between projects. A common rule of thumb is to set freelance rates 30–50% higher than the equivalent salaried hourly wage to deliver comparable net income.
Work backward from the annual income you need, divide by your realistic billable hours (which are always fewer than the hours you work), and add a margin for taxes and benefits. Then track how your income supports long-term goals with the Net Worth Calculator and the Budget Planner.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hourly wage to annual salary?
Multiply your hourly wage by the hours you work per week and the weeks you work per year. For full-time work that is hourly × 40 × 52 (2,080 hours). For example, $25 per hour equals $52,000 per year. Reduce the hours or weeks for part-time or unpaid-leave schedules.
What is $30 an hour annually?
$30 per hour equals about $62,400 per year at a full-time 40-hour, 52-week schedule ($30 × 2,080). Weekly gross pay is $1,200 and monthly gross is about $5,200. Part-time schedules produce proportionally lower annual totals.
Should freelancers charge the same hourly rate as employees?
No. Freelancers pay self-employment taxes, buy their own benefits, and have unpaid gaps between projects, so rates typically need to be 30–50% higher than an equivalent salaried hourly wage to deliver comparable net income.
